Dolphin SMART may be coming to O'ahu.  This a voluntary recognition and education program encouraging responsible viewing of wild dolphins that was first established in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.  Program participation is for commercial businesses conducting and booking wild dolphin tours. The Dolphin SMART program offers participation incentives for businesses that follow the program criteria and educate their customers about the importance of minimizing wild dolphin harassment.

Stay at least 50 yards from dolphins

Move away cautiously is dolphins show signs of disturbance

Always put your engine in neutral when dolphins are near

Refrain from swimming with touching or feeding dolphins

Teach others to be dolphin SMART

There will be an introductory meeting on December 3, 2008 at the Waianae District Park Community Center.  See the following links for more details.

PIPIN Joins HMMC

The Hawaii Marine Mammal Consortium (HMMC) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that studies marine mammals within Hawaiian waters and promotes the collaboration of researchers.  HMMC has made a commitment toward the outreach and education of the public on issues regarding the conservation of the marine environment and the whales, dolphins, and seals that inhabit it.

HMMC has invited PIPIN to join the Consortium.  This is an exciting partnership!  PIPIN will operate under HMMC’s umbrella and will continue working on the collaborative effort in creating a spinner dolphin photo-identification catalog within the Hawaiian Archipelago and the Pacific Islands Region.  Together PIPIN and HMMC will work toward a greater understanding of spinner dolphin stock structure, abundance, habitat use, movements, and vital rates.  Such information is critical for making decisions with regard to the conservation of the species.

Hi folks,

Most of you are probably off exploring Cape Town and other parts of South Africa, but I wanted to post a link to a UH today article on PIPIN, and spinners, in Hawaii. I think that they did a great job with the facts on this article, and the Slideshow section on PIPIN is informative and on track.
